The Programme for Swallows (Lastivky)

(6-9 years old)

The programme for Swallows is considered to be a preliminary to the Programme for Guides and focuses on working with children of the same age in groups and on the development of personal independence.

It contains 7 Programme Courses:

1. In the World of Guiding. Learning objectives of the course are to foster the sense of belonging to the Girl Guide Movement, to develop the conscious attitude to the Girl Guide Promise and Law, to develop the sense of respect to other people.

During this course a Swallow should:

-   learn the Promise and the Law

-   learn basic stages of historical development of Guiding

-   learn about Robert and Olave Baden-Powell

-  learn symbols of Guiding

-  celebrate the World Thinking Day

-   learn some customs and traditions of Guides in Ukraine and in other countries

-   have pen-pal friends in Guiding

2. Meetings with Mowgli.  Learning objectives of the course are to help the girls become aware of interdependency and interaction of people and nature, to give the basic knowledge about ecology, to prepare the girls for the living in the camp, to take care of nature.

During this course a Swallow should learn:

-   the nature and environment of the native region

-   how to prepare for a short camp

-   principles of personal safety

-   the basics of ecology

-   sport games, active games, out-of-door games

-   about animals

3. Travelling Across Ukraine.  Learning objectives of the course are to develop the sense of respect to Ukraine, to foster the girls in the spirit of national traditions.

During this course a Swallow should learn:

- outstanding episodes in the history of Ukraine
- national cultural heritage, folklore

- about her city or town
- own genealogy

4. Cinderella’s Secrets.  Learning objectives of the course are to develop the house holding skills and creativity.  

During this course a Swallow should learn:

-   the basics of the etiquette
- how to make salads and starters
- how to lay the table
- basics of sewing
- how to make crafts

5. Aybolit’s Advice. Learning objectives of the course are to popularize the healthy lifestyle, to acquaint the girls with the basics of medical skills.

During this course a Swallow should learn:

- about active lifestyle

- principles of the first aid

- about healthy eating
- about personal cleanliness

6. Following Robin Hood. Learning objectives of the course are to help the girls to become aware of other people’s needs, to popularize volunteering and charity.

During this course a Swallow should accumulate good deeds – to create her own “box” of good deeds.

7. Cat Leopold’s Lessons. Learning objectives of the course are to help the girls to define the system of their values, to acquaint the girls with values which are common to the mankind.

During this course a Swallow should learn:

-   the basics of ethics, spiritual and moral development

-   what friendship is

-   about solving conflicts
